WHAT HAPPENED AT THE DECEMBER MEETING? Camp members enjoyed good food and fellowship at our holiday dinner at Ruby Tuesday in Republic. Camp Commander Wait wished all members of Phelps Camp and their families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

NEXT MEETING The January meeting of Phelps Camp will be held at the Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Visitor Center on Tuesday, January 3 at 7 p.m. We will discuss plans/activities for 2012. Missouri Department Commander D. Christopher (Chris) Warren will be our special guest. All camp members are encouraged to attend and meet our department commander.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE NOVEMBER MEETING?

1) Members discussed the Zagonyi’s Charge ceremony on October 22. Michael Price will submit an article about the event to The Banner and the Missouri Unionist.

2) Members agreed that our December meeting should be a dinner meeting (see notice in this newsletter).

3) Members discussed conducting a memorial ceremony at Pea Ridge National Military Park in March 2012, to honor the men of Phelps’ Regiment.

4) Jeff Patrick reported that the Mountain Grove Community Foundation did not approve our grant request to restore the Civil War soldier monument in Mountain Grove. Camp members are now exploring other funding opportunities.

ZAGONYI’S CHARGE CEREMONY Members of Phelps Camp were joined by more than 40 visitors in commemorating the 150th anniversary of “Zagonyi’s Charge” (the first battle of Springfield) on Saturday, October 22 at Zagonyi Park in Springfield. Camp members Herb Jackson, Steve Weldon, John Rutherford, Jeff Patrick, Kip Lindberg and Larry Toll made remarks, along with Sally McAlear of the Phelps Tent, Daughters of Union Veterans. The Wilson’s Creek artillery crew ended the 45-minute ceremony with a dramatic (and very loud) shot from their 6-pounder cannon. Thanks to all the members of Phelps Camp for attending this important ceremony to honor the men of Fremont’s Body Guard and White’s Prairie Scouts who fought and died at Springfield.

NEXT MEETING The December meeting of Phelps Camp will be our traditional holiday gathering. We will gather for dinner at Ruby Tuesday’s in Republic (Highway 60, across from Wal-Mart) on Tuesday, December 6 at 6:30 p.m. All camp members, spouses and other family members are cordially invited. New Tombstones In Kirksville

Members of Phelps Camp No. 66, Department of Missouri, recently visited the graves of Jacob and Sitha Sholley in Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery in Kirksville, Missouri. The camp ordered and installed headstones for Jacob, a member of the 11th and 2nd Missouri State Militia Cavalry regiments, and Sitha, who served in her husband's regiments as a nurse. About fifty people joined the members of Phelps Camp in commemorating Zagonyi's Charge. Phelps Camp wishes to thank the Springfield-Greene County Park Board for its cooperation in this important program. Additional photos are available in the gallery at the top of the page.

DAUGHTERS OF UNION VETERANS MARKER CEREMONY

On Friday, September 30, members of Mary Whitney Phelps Tent, Daughters of Union Veterans dedicated a new historical marker honoring the achievements of Mary Phelps in establishing an orphanage for the children of fallen Union soldiers in 1865. The event took place at Sunshine Elementary School, on the corner of Jefferson and Sunshine in Springfield. Greg Wait, Jeff Patrick and Gary Riley volunteered for the color guard, and a large crowd of spectators (and MANY students) turned out for the program and monument unveiling. The weather was perfect as the men of Phelps Camp presented the colors for the pledge of allegiance and fired a musket volley during the unveiling. Congratulations to the ladies of Phelps Tent for their successful efforts to honor Mary Phelps. Be sure to have a look at the beautiful marker if you’re in the area.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE SEPTEMBER MEETING?

1) Members discussed plans for the commemorative ceremony for “Zagonyi’s Charge on October 22.

2) Members discussed upcoming plans for the Lexington battle reenactment.

3) Jeff Patrick announced that a grant application would be submitted by the end of September to the Mountain Grove Community Foundation, seeking funds for the restoration of that city’s Union soldier monument.

4) Members were encouraged to attend the DUV marker dedication ceremony on September 30 (see below).

NEW MEMBER
Phelps Camp is pleased to announce that we have a new member, Donald Lancaster of Mountain View, Missouri. His great-great grandfather was St. Clair Lancaster of Company I, 7th Maryland Infantry Regiment. Private Lancaster served his country from September 1862 through May 1865. The 7th Maryland's war service was in Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia. Welcome to Phelps Camp!

NEXT MEETING The October meeting of Phelps Camp will be held at the Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Visitor Center on Tuesday, October 4 at 7 p.m. Jeff Patrick will present a brief program about his recent visit to the grave of Captain David Van Buskirk, the “biggest Yankee in the world.”

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE AUGUST MEETING?

The August meeting was postponed until August 10 so that members could attend the program commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek (see below).

A VERY BUSY AUGUST August was a very busy month for Phelps Camp. On August 10, camp members attended the ceremony marking the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. Due to the threat of thunderstorms, the event was moved from the battlefield to the Republic High School. A number of camp members were present in the audience for the two-hour program, and three of the four Civil War soldiers in the official color guard were Phelps Camp members! Two days later, the Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Foundation hosted the official 150th anniversary battle reenactment on land near the battlefield. Once again, Phelps Camp members “stepped up to the plate” and manned a recruiting/information table all three days. We talked with many visitors and sold books and other items. Thanks to the generosity of camp member Brian Shay, we were able to add funds to the camp treasury. Brian, who has retired from Civil War reenacting, sent us a large amount of reproduction uniform pieces and equipment to sell at the reenactment. Thanks, Brian! All in all, it was an excellent week to remember the sacrifices of our ancestors, and to get the word out about Phelps Camp and the SUV.

Our thanks to Greg Wait, Herb Jackson and Larry Toll for participating in the August 10 ceremony, and to Tim Wilkinson, Gary Brimmer, Kirk Singleton and Richard Cochran for manning the information table!

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE JUNE MEETING?

1) Members discussed upcoming events, including 150th anniversary ceremonies for the battles of Carthage, Wilson’s Creek and Springfield (Zagonyi’s Charge), and the Wilson’s Creek battle reenactment.

BATTLE OF CARTHAGE CEREMONY
Several members of Phelps Camp participated in a ceremony marking the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Carthage on Saturday, July 9. After a formal commemorative ceremony, Phelps Camp member Steve Weldon introduced Carthage artist Andy Thomas, who unveiled preliminary sketches of the proposed German-American soldier memorial (see attached photos). Phelps Camp members will serve as official historical advisors on the monument project. Despite blistering heat, a large crowd was in attendance to remember those on both sides who fell on July 5, 1861.

NEXT MEETING Next month’s meeting will be rescheduled to coincide with the 150th anniversary activities at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield on August 10. Activities begin with period music at 6:30 p.m., followed by the ceremony at 7 p.m. We will have a short business meeting in the Visitor Center following the ceremony. Visitors are encouraged to park in the Visitor Center lot and ride a shuttle bus to the Ray House, where the ceremony will take place.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR WILSON’S CREEK REENACTMENT Phelps Camp will have a recruiting/sales table at the Wilson’s Creek reenactment on August 12-14. WHAT HAPPENED AT THE MAY MEETING?

1) Camp Commander Wait reported that several members of Phelps Camp attended a ceremony marking the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Union troops in Rolla. As part of the ceremony, members of Holmes Brigade marched to the historic Phelps County Courthouse, took down a Confederate First National flag and replaced it with the Stars and Stripes, exactly as it was done 150 years ago.

2) Members were reminded about the 150th anniversary ceremony in Carthage on Saturday, July 9.

BATTLE OF CARTHAGE CEREMONY
Phelps Camp member Steve Weldon invites all members of Phelps Camp and their families to come observe the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Carthage on Saturday, July 9 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Musket firing demonstrations will be conducted by members of Holmes Brigade throughout the day, and a formal commemorative ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. The preliminary sketches of the proposed German-American soldier memorial will be unveiled at that time as well. Phelps Camp members are encouraged to attend in comfortable clothes (it should be nice and cool!) and wear their SUV medals. The ceremony should last approximately one hour. All activities will be held in Central Park, 714 S. Garrison, directly across from the Carthage Public Library.

IN MEMORIAM

We extend our condolences to Phelps Camp member Michael Price, who recently lost his mother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Michael and his family.

1) Jeff Patrick reported that a letter has been sent to the Community Foundation of Mountain Grove asking for assistance to restore the “Soldier’s Monument” there.

2) Members were reminded that the latest issue of the Missouri Unionist may be downloaded at http://www.suvcwmo.org.

3) Jeff Patrick reported that planning continues on the Zagonyi’s Charge program, scheduled for October 22.

4) Members enjoyed an excellent presentation by John Sutton on cavalry carbines of the Civil War, and were allowed to examine a number of reproduction carbines.

STEVE WELDON UPDATE

Camp member Steve Weldon, who lives in Joplin, reports that the Weldon family suffered some property damage but otherwise all are well. The thoughts and prayers of the members of Phelps Camp go out to all those in Joplin.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE APRIL MEETING?

1) Gary Riley and David Coffman reported that they have approached several community organizations in Mountain Grove about funding the “Soldier Monument” restoration there. Phelps Camp has been asked to submit a formal request to the Community Foundation of Mountain Grove, and Gary and David will continue their efforts to obtain funding for this worthwhile project.

2) Members were reminded that the Civil War Round Table of the Ozarks meets on the second Wednesday evening of each month at the Springfield-Greene County Library Center.

3) Members were reminded about that the latest issue of the Missouri Unionist may be downloaded at http://www.suvcwmo.org.

4) Jeff Patrick reported that planning continues on the Zagonyi’s Charge program, scheduled for October 22.

5) Members enjoyed a fine presentation by John Rutherford on the life of John Hutchison, who was honored as Missouri’s last Civil War veteran by the state legislature shortly before his death in 1951.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE MARCH MEETING?

1) Members performed the SUV ritual ceremony and inducted several new members, including Larry Toll, Bob Drake, and Eddie Cox.

2) Jeff Patrick reported that an estimate on the restoration cost for the Mountain Grove soldier’s monument would be ready by mid-March.

3) Members were reminded about the Pea Ridge anniversary ceremony on March 5

4) Jeff Patrick reported that a brick/paver has been purchased in honor of Union soldiers, sailors and marines for the planned Republic Veterans Memorial.

5) Members discussed the John Hutchison event at Isabella, Missouri on March 20.

AFTER-ACTION REPORT: PEA RIDGE

On Saturday, March 5, several members of Phelps Camp braved very cold temperatures in order to honor the men of the Army of the Southwest at the Pea Ridge Battle Anniversary Ceremony. Commander Wait gave a short talk on behalf of the SUVCW, and the members of Phelps Camp performed musket firing demonstrations and gave “soldier life” talks the rest of the day. AFTER-ACTION REPORT: ISABELLA

On Sunday, March 20, members of Phelps Camp honored the last recognized Missouri Civil War veteran, John Hutchison, and Medal of Honor recipient Harrison Collins at the Isabella, Missouri cemetery. A crowd of approximately 70 people were there to hear remarks by Commander Wait, Secretary John Rutherford and Daughters of Union Veterans Commander Sally McAlear. Phelps Camp members formed a color guard, presented a memorial wreath, and fired a musket volley to conclude the ceremony (see attached photos).

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE FEBRUARY MEETING?

1) Members agreed to purchase a brick/paver in honor of Union veterans at the planned Veterans Memorial in Republic, Mo.

2) Greg Wait, Jeff Patrick, David Coffman and Gary Riley agreed to meet on Sunday, February 20, to photograph and measure the Mountain Grove, Missouri soldier’s monument. That material will then be submitted to the monument restoration company in order for them to formulate an estimate and restoration plan.

3) Members discussed the “Zagonyi’s Charge” event at Zagonyi Park in Springfield on Saturday, October 22, to mark the 150th anniversary of the charge and the recapture of Springfield.

4) As some applications for new members are still pending, it was decided to postpone the ritual/initiation ceremony until the March meeting.

NEXT MEETING The March meeting will be held at the Visitor Center at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 7 p.m. SPECIAL NOTE: We will perform the SUV ritual ceremony that night in order to welcome our new members into the organization. If you are a new member and have not been initiated, please attend. If you have been initiated, we need members to help perform the ritual. Don’t be frightened—there’s nothing to memorize (you’ll have a script to follow), and there’s no physical pain or embarrassment!

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE JANUARY MEETING?

1) Camp elections were held, with the 2010 officers unanimously elected for 2011.

2) Members agreed to perform the SUV initiation ritual at the February meeting.

3) Jeff Patrick announced that the Carthage monument proposal has been approved by the Carthage City Council. Once the selected artist/designer has finished a few other projects, he will submit a preliminary design of the proposed monument to the camp.

4) Jeff Patrick agreed to contact a monument restoration company re: the Mountain Grove, Missouri soldier’s monument. The monument is in need of cleaning/restoration. Jeff will ask the company about any travel fees they may charge in order to examine the monument and furnish an estimate for the restoration.

5) Members agreed that the camp should host a “Zagonyi’s Charge” event at Zagonyi Park in Springfield on Saturday, October 22, to mark the 150th anniversary of the charge and the recapture of Springfield.

6) Member Bob Drake alerted members to the new Civil War 150th day-by-day site maintained by the New York Times (http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/category/disunion).

NEXT MEETING The February meeting will be held at the Visitor Center at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 7 p.m. SPECIAL NOTE: We will perform the SUV ritual ceremony that night in order to welcome our new members into the organization. 3) Herb Jackson reported that male living history volunteers are needed for the annual Candlelight Tour at Fort Scott National Historic Site on Friday and Saturday, December 3-4. If you are able to help, contact Galen Ewing at 620-223-0310.

4) Members were asked to think about a possible camp publishing project for the Wilson’s Creek 150^th anniversary reenactment next August.

5) Members enjoyed the second of a two-part presentation on the history of the Grand Army of the Republic.

FOR LINCOLN AND LIBERTY!

Camp members Greg Wait, Kip Lindberg and Jeff Patrick participated in ceremonies marking the 150^th anniversary of the election of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois. A crowd of approximately 300 people, led by living history “Wide Awake” Lincoln supporters, escorted Mr. Lincoln (Lincoln impersonator Fritz Klein) from the Old State Capital to the Lincoln Home, where Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln welcomed well-wishers.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE OCTOBER MEETING?

1) Jeff Patrick reported that the headstones for the two graves in Kirksville have been delivered, and payment for their installation has been sent to the monument company. We are now planning an official dedication ceremony for next April. Union veteran Dr. A.T. Still, the father of osteopathic medicine, is buried in the same cemetery, so we will mark his grave as well.

2) Members were again encouraged to read and contribute material to the Phelps Camp blog (www.phelpscamp.blogspot.com).
3) Steve Weldon reported that the Carthage Park Board has approved our proposal to erect a monument in Central Park. The proposal will now go before the Carthage City Council. A prominent southwest Missouri artist has agreed to design the monument. More details TBA.

5) Members were asked to think about a possible camp publishing project for the Wilson’s Creek 150^th anniversary reenactment next August.

6) Camp members Gary Riley, David Coffman, Greg Wait and Jeff Patrick represented Phelps Camp at the Pioneer Descendants Festival in Douglas County on October 2. While there, they discovered that the headstones of two Union veterans buried in nearby Yates Cemetery need to be replaced. New stones will be ordered this winter.

The regularly scheduled monthly meeting was postponed due to Election Day, so the next meeting of Phelps Camp will be on Tuesday, November 9 at 7 p.m. at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. 1) Jeff Patrick reported that the headstones for the two graves in Kirksville have arrived. Despite our instructions, one was delivered to Kirksville and one to Republic! Jeff and Greg Wait will deliver the stone to Kirksville on Friday, September 10.

3) Larry Toll reported that a required IRS “EIN” number has been secured for our SVR unit, and all the necessary paperwork has been submitted.
4) Steve Weldon reported that the Carthage Park Board will consider our proposal to erect a monument in Central Park at their monthly meeting on October 4. Jeff Patrick will attend and represent the camp.

5) Interest has been expressed in attending the Springfield Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 6. Greg Wait will contact parade officials to obtain more information.

3) A letter has been drafted to the Carthage, Missouri city administrator, asking the city’s permission to allow the SUV to place a monument to the Union veterans of the Battle of Carthage on city property. What Happened at the June Meeting?

1) Herb Jackson reported the receipt of a letter from SUVCW National Counselor Robert Grim regarding the Zagonyi monument. Mr. Grim recommended that the camp consult an attorney to determine the monument’s ownership. Herb will contact the Missouri Attorney General’s Office for further advice.

2) Members agreed that a portion of the donation received from the upcoming Fort Scott event should be used to purchase a traveling display that camp members can use at public events. Jeff Patrick will check on design options, cost, etc.

3) Commander Wait reported that the SUVCW National Encampment will be held in Overland Park, Kansas this August. He is planning on attending the event, along with Senior Vice- Commander Jeff Patrick.

4) Todd Wilkinson reported that Phelps Camp now has a “Facebook” page, and encouraged Facebook members to have a look.

5) Members agreed to make the July meeting a “Graves Registration” meeting (see below).

Fort Scott "Parade of the Soldier"

Several members of Phelps Camp assisted with “Good Old Days” at Fort Scott National Historic Site by presenting the “Parade of the American Soldier” program on June 5-6. Despite extremely hot weather, thousands of visitors came to the fort and thoroughly enjoyed the camp’s display. Camp members received many compliments for sharing their knowledge with park visitors. The City of Fort Scott made a sizeable donation to Phelps Camp for providing the program. A big “thank you” goes to camp members Greg Wait, Steve Weldon, Larry Toll, Gary Riley, David Coffman, Jeff Patrick, Kip Lindberg and Kirk Singleton for their efforts!

Next Meeting

The next meeting of Phelps Camp will be on Tuesday, July 6. We will meet at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield at 6 p.m. in order to carpool to Stone County. Our plan is to “read” several cemeteries in the Galena and Cape Fair areas. Please bring water. Clipboards, pens and forms will be furnished. If you prefer, you can meet us at the Galena Cemetery at 6:45.

The Galena Cemetery is located southwest of town. If approaching Galena from the west on MO 248, turn right on Blunk Road, then left on Cemetery Road.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE MAY MEETING?

1) Jeff Patrick reported that the VA headstone forms have been mailed to the Kirksville City Clerk’s Office. As soon as they are returned with signatures we can order the stones, with a possible dedication/memorial service this fall.

2) Larry Toll reported that the forms and other paperwork necessary to register our Sons of Veterans Reserve unit have been completed and will be mailed to the department.

3) Members were reminded about the Boone Home and Fort Scott events.

4) Jeff Patrick gave a slide program on his recent trip to the National Civil War Naval Museum and the National Infantry Museum, both in Columbus, Georgia.

BOONE HOME “SPRING FROLIC”

Despite brief showers, six members of Phelps Camp presented a portion of the “Parade of the American Soldier” program for the “Spring Frolic” at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site in Ash Grove, Missouri. Camp members represented the American soldier during four important periods (Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War and Civil War). Although attendance was light, the visitors seemed to enjoy the presentation and asked many questions.

WHAT HAENED AT THE APRIL MEETING?

1) Herb Jackson reported that he has contacted the owner of the property where the Zagonyi’s Charge monument is located, but that the owner claims ownership of the monument as well. The property owner would like to have Phelps Camp issue a letter acknowledging his “donation” of the monument to the camp. Herb has sent a letter to the National Counselor and Commander asking for legal advice as to how we should proceed.

2) Members were reminded about the Fort Sand Springs ceremony (see later in this issue).

4) Jeff Patrick gave an update on the Kirksville headstone project. He informed the membership that the historical “fact-checking” has been completed, so he will proceed with ordering the two headstones from the V.A. If all goes well, we will have a dedication ceremony this fall.

CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE AND SAND SPRINGS CEREMONIES

Four members of Phelps Camp provided the color guard at the Civil War Round Table of the Ozarks 50^th anniversary dinner on April 17. Approximately 170 people attended the dinner and enjoyed a presentation by Civil War historian and author Dr. Steven Woodworth of Texas Christian University.

On April 24, Camp Commander Wait and members John Rutherford, Herb Jackson, Kip Lindberg, Bob Clanton, Bob Drake and Jeff Patrick attended the Fort Sand Springs monument dedication near Marshfield. Members of Phelps Tent, Daughters of Union Veterans presented a fine program. Due to inclement weather, the ceremony was moved to a nearby church, which was filled to capacity with approximately 125 people. Well done ladies!

Col. Phelps is a man of wide experience, great ability and tried patriotism. His residence is in Springfield, Missouri. He has been, for several years, in command of a Missouri regiment, and performed distinguished services in the battle of Pea Ridge. Two sons were with him in that fight, and one of them was severely wounded. Colonel Phelps' wife, after the battle of Wilson's Creek devoted herself to the care of our wounded, and hundreds of grateful soldiers testify to her kindness. It was she who cared for the body of General Lyon, and caused its restoration to his friends. Col. Phelps, now that the armed rebels are driven out of his Congressional district, feels justified in taking his seat as its representative in Congress. His high character and dauntless courage---his services in the field and experience as a legisltor---will give him great influence at Washington, which, we have no doubt, he will exert with wisdom.---Cin. Fort Sand Springs Monument Dedication

The Mary Whitney Phelps Tent #22, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, will host a dedication ceremony for their Fort Sand Springs monument on April 24, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. The program will take place at the intersection of State Highway 38 and Timber Ridge Road (County Road 626) in Webster County. Colors will be presented by the 4th Missouri Cavalry (U.S.), a local reenacting unit. The ceremony will feature a history of Fort Sand Springs and a 21-gun salute. Descendants of soldiers who served at the fort will also be recognized.

What Happened At The March Meeting?

1. Herb Jackson reported that he is still attempting to locate the owners of the property where the Zagonyi's Charge monument is located. Richard Cochran announced that the has made contact with Wommack Monument Company, and that they are interested in moving the Zagonyi monument when that time comes.

2. Phelps Camp has been asked to assist with a headstone dedication ceremony for a Union veteran in Boone County, Arkansas later this year.

3. Members selected "Company D, Phelps' Regiment, Missouri Infantry as our SVR persona.

4. Members discussed a project in Kirksville, Missouri to mark the graves of a Union veteran and his wife who served as a Union army nurse. Jeff Patrick informed the membership that a few historical facts need to be checked before the headstone application forms can be mailed to the V.A.

Sherman and Pea Ridge Ceremonies

Several members of Phelps Camp attended the February 28 ceremony at General William T. Sherman's grave in St. Louis. A large crowd of spectators and reenactors turned out for the event.

On March 7, Camp Commander Wait gave a powerful address at the Pea Ridge Anniversary Ceremony. Several members of the camp were in attendance at that ceremony as well.

The 1899 Reunion

“The 1899 Reunion,” Christian County (Mo.) Republican, May 18, 1899, 5

The Christian Co. Veterans Association have decided to hold the Reunion this year at the town that will give the largest bonus and the full control of the grounds. Ozark is really the best place in the county, best able to take care of large crowds, good grounds and abundance of good water, and we hope our citizens will make a successful effort to secure this gathering. The Reunion will be held in August, and will continue three days. A meeting should be held and committees appointed to solicit subscriptions. Let us have it.

Sand Springs

The Mary Whitney Phelps Tent #22, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, recently had a monument erected near the site of Fort Sand Springs, in Webster County, Missouri. It can be found at the southeast corner of Missouri 38 and Timber Ridge Road. The monument is approximately one mile from the site of Fort Sand Springs.

A small Union post was located at Sand Springs during the Civil War. A skirmish was fought there on January 9, 1863, one day after the Battle of Springfield. Confederates under General Joseph Shelby scattered the Union garrison in a brief fight. Shelby's men camped at Sand Springs that evening, then destroyed the post before moving towards Hartville the next day.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE DECEMBER MEETING?

Members heard a report from Herb Jackson on the possible move of the "Zagonyi's Charge" monument from its current location (Mount Vernon Street and Kansas Expressway in Springfield) to a more suitable location in Zagonyi Park in time for the 150^th anniversary of the charge in 2011. Herb reported that the University Club is in favor of such a move. He will now contact the landowner and the City of Springfield to get their approval.

The camp agreed to hold elections at the January meeting.

Camp members discussed various activities for 2010, including at least two "Parade of the Soldier" events and a possible tour of the Springfield National Cemetery.

80 Years Ago, September 26, 1929

M.T. Kelley of northeast of Pierce City brought to the Leader-Journal office a copy of the Vicksburg, Miss. Daily Citizen, dated July 2, 1863. It was the last copy issued and is printed on wallpaper. We find the following notice by the editor-July 4, 1863. Two days bring about great changes. The banner of the Union floats over Vicksburg. General Grant has “caught the rabbit”; he has dined in Vicksburg, and he did bring his dinner with him. The “Citizen” lives to see it. For the lat time it appears on “wall paper.” No more will it eulogize the luxury of mule meat and fricasseed kitten—urge Southern warriors to such diet never more. This is the last wallpaper edition and is, excepting this note, from the types as we found them. It will be valuable hereafter as a curiosity.

H.C. Shoemaker, one of our old citizens, was in Vicksburg when the town surrendered to the Union Army.

To the Editor: I think Comrade S.S. Cain, 7th Mo. Cav., is mistaken as to Marmaduke commanding the rebel army there. My impression is that Hindman was at the head, with headquarters at Van Buren, on the Arkansas River, where he was afterwards assassinated. My regiment (7th Mo. Cav.) received orders on the evening of the 5th to be prepared to move at a minute’s warning. “Boots and saddles” was sounded at daybreak on the 6th; we were then at Keithsville, Mo. We moved off at a trot, keeping that gait the greater portion of the day, passing infantry, artillery and cavalry on the way, going through Cross Hollows, Pea Ridge, Mud Town and Fayetteville, Ark., about dusk, stopping some six miles below the town, where we dismounted to rest. We remained there some three hours, and were again ordered to move. About daylight on the 7th we stopped between two large corn-fields to feed the horses and rest ourselves; and I remember, distinctly, after being in the saddle that length of time, it was equally as comfortable standing as it was sitting. I am satisfied that at this time the commanding officers perfectly unconscious of the proximity of any force of rebels, as we could not have been placed in a more unfavorable position to repel an attack; it was Lone Jack over again. Just after daylight, three men of Co. C went to the end of the lane, in them timber, to get one or more of several pigs that had been seen there, when they were fired upon and two of them killed; the third, Balaam Fox, ran back to the command, shot through the hand. It was but a few minutes before the bullets were coming from the corn on either side of us and the end of the lane south. Several attempts were made to form us for a charge, but as the lane was filled with horses and men there was much confusion, and finding it impossible to do so, a retreat was ordered. No sooner had this commenced than the lane in our rear was filled with rebel cavalry, who used their revolvers to good advantage at short range and we were compelled to surrender. The killed in this part of the fight were nearly all stripped naked and tramped under foot by the horses. After being captured I, with a number of other prisoners, was marched back some half-mile, meeting some 20 brass field pieces hurrying to the front. Two of these were the ones taken from the 3 Ind. Battery by the rebels at Lone Jack, Mo., Aug. 16, 1862. We were told here that rebel force present was between 25,000 and 30,000. The prisoners were kept from a half mile to a mile in the rear of line of battle all day, moving about occasionally to escape the shells from our batteries that would sometimes cut the limbs from the trees over our heads, and sometimes lying flat on our faces. About noon we were marched to a frame house, where our names, rank and regiment were taken by a rebel officer. There were present at this time, as prisoners, 29 of the 6th Mo. Cav., 123 of the 7th Mo. Cav., 14 of the 8th Mo. Cav., and 73 of the 1st Ark. Cav.

In the door of the house stood an old gray-haired lady clapping her hands and crying: “Thank God! Thank God! that I have lived to see this day.” But her joy was short-lived, as the house was burned within a few days, and the rebels in full retreat.

Comrade Beatty says that the last cannon of the rebels was disabled before 4 o’clock p.m. In this he is mistaken, as a battery passed us leaving the field about 6 p.m., which was the first move I saw indicating a retreat. We could hear Blunt plainly when he opened fire about 4 o’clock p.m. It turned quite cold during the night and the prisoners suffered considerably, as their overcoats and blankets had been taken from them and they were not permitted to build fires, although the guards outside had fires. We were started south about 1 o’clock a.m. of the 8th. We received nothing to eat until about 1 o’clock a.m. of the 9th, when we received about a pint of meal each. From the time we were captured, at daylight on the 7th, to this time we lived upon the grains of corn picked from the dirt where the rebel cavalry-men fed their horses and slippery elm bark gathered from the trees near by the roadside, which was pretty thin food for a long tramp. I believe some of the prisoners were successful in begging a piece of corn “pone” from the guards occasionally. We were taken across the Boston Mountains to Van Buren, thence to Fort Smith, where we were kept in an old tobacco warehouse. Our rations here was about one quart per Yankee of cornmeal (more like hominy than meal) with considerable cob in it. Sometimes with our corn we would get about two tablespoonfuls of brown sugar each; at others, a small piece of fresh beef and a tablespoonful of salt. My mess had an iron kettle holding, perhaps, two gallons. When we drew sugar we would first make a mush and then stir in the sweetening. When done, each with a little wooden paddle, would “gather by the kettle” and eat as fast as could be expected under the circumstances. When we received meat it would first be boiled and removed from the kettle and the meal stirred in. One thing that could be said of our rations is that we had a variety, and not meal “ad nauseum,” like the boys at Andersonville.

Editor National Tribune:

When I left my home in Brunswick , Mo. , in 1861, to join the 18th Mo. , there were only 12 families of pronounced Union sentiments living in that community, and excepting the German farmers who resided in Chariton County , loyalty was prominent by its absence. Upon my return from rebel prison in 1863, I found a whole regiment of Chariton County citizens stationed at Brunswick who were wearing the blue.

I learned that every able-bodied man except aliens, who resided in the County, had been compelled to enroll himself either as loyal or disloyal. If he enrolled as loyal, he was subject to be ordered into active military service, and if enrolled as disloyal, he was liable to special assessment. Under these circumstances it made but little difference to a majority of our citizens which horn of the dilemma they chose, as it was a losing game in either case whether they served in the militia or paid assessments.

However, there was some calculating minds who conceived the idea of enrolling as loyal, and when ordered out for duty to furnish a substitute, and in consequence of this expediency, militia substitutes soon became in great demand, so that their price ranged from $200 to $400 each. It seems that the Adjutant of a militia regiment was charged with the duty to pass upon the qualifications of these substitutes, hence, those who were ready to become substitutes reported themselves to him, and by the liberal application of division and silence, many physical defects were covered up and the fellow accepted as sound and qualified. When the supply of substitutes ran short, he managed to have some one to be discharged or relieved from duty and then re-enter him as substitute for another man. The oftener this process was gone through with, the more money was realized by these individuals.

Among those who were accepted as substitutes was an old wagon-maker by the name of Frank Henneberg. Physical defects (hernia) entitled him to exemption papers, but he answered as a substitute because he made a liberal division with the officer, who kept the lion’s share of the bonus. In fact, Frank had, in a very short time, been entered for three different persons, and found the life of a militia man to be both pleasant and profitable.

However, Frank was somewhat of a philosopher, and had ample time to reason to his own satisfaction that his services were worth as much as that of the Adjutant’s, who got the largest part, hence, when he was again in demand as a substitute(having been relieved from duty for that purpose), he put the $300 which he got for his last entry into his pocket, and refused to give more than $50 to the officer who had managed the business thus far. The result of Frank’s actions proved disastrous to him, as instead of being permitted to remain in camp, doing little or nothing, he was required to stand guard night after night, something that Frank did not relish at all, and which gave him much concern.

Frank sought a remedy, and he found it. One night while on guard in front of the camp he noticed his tormentor, the Adjutant, in company with his Colonel, approaching the entrance. He immediately challenged them, and they replied: “Why, Frank, this is me,” and proceeded toward the entrance. But Frank said: “I don’t know ‘me,’” and commanded them to halt. The officers took it for a joke, and proceeded, when bang! went Frank’s old musket, and a bullet whistled over the heads of the badly-scared officers.

The alarm brought out the Sergeant of the Guard, and the trembling militia heroes were admitted. A consultation between them resulted in reaching a conclusion that Frank was a dangerous guard, as they frequently were out late at night, hence they directed that he should no longer be placed on guard duty, but should be detailed as cook. Frank did not like the idea of taking the place of some colored man, and declared that he knew less about cooking than about standing guard, but his protest was in vain, he was doomed to don the apron and to be ready to cook the next dinner.

When the Commissary Sergeant brought a supply to him he sent word to the Adjutant requesting instructions what to do with it, whose reply was, “---it; tell him to cook it in the big kettle.” Frank said, “All right, I’ll obey orders,” and, filling the kettle with water, he emptied the entire commissary stores, including unground coffee, candles, and soap, with the bacon and potatoes, into the kettle and kept up a good fire till dinner-time.
At the usual signal the men marched into the dining-room and the contraband waiters began to serve boiled bacon and soup, but no sooner had the men tasted the broth than they began to look for Frank, but Frank was gone, no explanation could be obtained from him, hence the kettle was explored, and candle-wick and other ingredients which were found soon disclosed the incipiency of Frank’s culinary attainments.

After some days search for the “cook” he was found, but claimed that he suddenly had taken sick; but, sick or not sick, Frank was placed in the guard-house, a court-martial was summoned, and his trial resulted in convicting him of conduct unbecoming a militiaman, etc., and his punishment was fixed, first, that his head be shaved, and, second, that he be marched by the music of the Rogue’s March through the principal streets out of town.

This sentence was carried out to the letter, and to the great amusement of the boys who furnished the escort or were spectators of the procession, with Frank as the principal attraction. Frank not only reached the suburbs of the town but continued his march till he found a more hospitable shelter with a friendly farmer some miles away from town.

After the war was over Frank delighted to tell of his exploits, and, after detailing the particulars as to the amount of money he made, would say, “By golly, I did not care to be a substitute any longer and got a free shave, but kept my money.” --L. Grand Army of the Republic

The Grand Army of The Republic was the largest organization of Union Veterans in America. It was founded by Benjamin F. Stephenson in Decatur, Illinois, on April 6, 1866. The GAR was a fraternal group for men who were honorably discharged from the Union Army and Navy. Local Posts were established throughout the country and named in honor of a deceased Union hero. Membership grew through the years and the GAR became an increasingly powerful political lobby that worked tirelessly for pensions and other veterans’ issues. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is the official successor to the GAR.

Memorial Day is the most visible reminder of the GAR today. Originally known as Decoration Day, it began in 1868 when GAR Commander-In-Chief John A. Logan issued General Orders No. 11, urging all posts to spend May 30 honoring their fallen comrades.

The official GAR newspaper was the National Tribune. Published weekly, each issue featured reminiscences from veterans. These articles are an invaluable source for historians about many important battles and campaigns. The recollections also illustrate the routine, and even humorous episodes associated with army life. Articles from the National Tribune, along with articles about the GAR from local newspapers, will be reprinted on this blog in memory of the brave men who preserved the Union from 1861-1865.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE NOVEMBER MEETING?

Members discussed future camp projects, and agreed that funding another battle monument (this time in southwest Missouri) is a worthwhile project that can be completed by the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The location of this monument will be announced after approval is obtained from the landowner and a contract is finalized with the monument company.

Members discussed negotiating with the University Club and the City of Springfield authorities to move the “Zagonyi’s Charge” monument from its current location (Mount Vernon Street and Kansas Expressway) to a more suitable location in Zagonyi Park. Camp member Herb Jackson has volunteered to lead this effort.

Members were encouraged to have a look at the new Phelps Camp blog (http://www.phelpscamp.blogspot.com/), and contribute Civil War news, historical information, etc., to editor Michael Price.

Members were informed that an article and photographs highlighting the Lexington and Cave Springs monument dedications have been submitted to The Banner.

The next meeting of Phelps Camp will be on Tuesday, December 1 at 7 p.m. at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. We will discuss camp plans for 2010 and watch a recent documentary on the Battle of Fredericksburg.

Cave Spring Monument

With members of Phelps Camp in attendance, a monument was erected at the Cave Spring school and cemetery, northeast of Sarcoxie, Missouri on October 3, 2009. The monument recognizes the wartime sacrifices of this Unionist community in southwest Missouri. Cave Spring was an early settlement in Jasper County. A school was established there in the early 1840s. By the Civil War, it was still a small, rural community. Though few in number, these citizens remained loyal to the Union. One regiment, the 76th Enrolled Missouri Militia, was recruited in the Cave Spring and Bowers’ Mill area. The monument lists the 37 soldiers and 10 civilians from the Cave Spring neighborhood who died during the war, either from wounds or disease.

Lexington Monument Dedication

On September 26, 2009, members of Phelps Camp proudly dedicated a monument to the Union defenders of Lexington, Missouri. Missouri and Illinois volunteers commanded by Colonel James A. Mulligan stubbornly defended the Lexington garrison from September 12-20, 1861. Representatives from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, and Congressman Ike Skelton spoke at the dedication. Several members of Holmes Brigade, a prominent reenacting unit, served in the color guard. The monument was erected near the Union entrenchments at the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site.

Attendees were privileged to meet Mr. David Luff, a descendant of George Palmer. Palmer, a musician in the 1st Illinois Cavalry, received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on September 20. He led a charge which drove Confederate sharpshooters away from the Anderson House, a Union hospital. Mr. Luff generously displayed Palmer’s Medal of Honor and a Union flag he rescued.

With this long term project complete, Phelps Camp eagerly looks forward to new activities which will honor the services of Union soldiers.

CWRTO CONFERENCE

Phelps Camp was represented at the Civil War Round Table of the Ozarks Conference at the Clarion Hotel in Springfield on Saturday, October 10. Camp members manned a table, handing
out free literature and selling copies of the Chronicles and GAR book.

CAVE SPRINGS MONUMENT DEDICATION CEREMONY

Several members of Phelps Camp attended a wonderful monument dedication ceremony at Cave Springs, near Sarcoxie, Missouri, on Saturday, October 3. A large, impressive monument to the members of the 76th Enrolled Missouri Militia and the Union civilians who gave their lives during the Civil War was unveiled before a large crowd. Members of the camp presented a musket firing demonstration and participated in the memorial service at the adjacent cemetery. Camp Commander Wait spoke on behalf of Phelps Camp.
It is a little-known fact that many members of the 76th , along with pro-Union civilians in the area, perished while trying to protect their homes and families against guerrilla bands.

Phelps Camp Charter Ceremony

The charter ceremony for Phelps Camp was held in October 1994 in the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield Visitor Center. The event also marked the anniversary of Zagonyi's Charge on October 25, 1861. Led by Major Charles Zagonyi, this daring cavalry charge allowed Union forces to briefly recapture Springfield, Missouri.

How to join Phelps Camp

Phelps camp is always anxious to welcome new members. Persons interested in joining the camp are encouraged to attend a monthly meeting. They are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the Visitor Center at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. Meetings begin at 7 P.M. and here visitors can meet with camp members and learn more about our activities.

Annual dues are $25. New members pay an extra $5 when they join. An associate membership is available for those without an ancestor who served in the Union army or Navy. An application is available on the national web site at http://www.suvcw.org/member.htm

What is the SUVCW?

If you have an interest in the Civil War, and especially if you have an ancestor who served honorably in the Union Army, Navy, or Marine Corps, you may wish to join the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. This brief introduction to the SUVCW will answer some questions about the organization and how you may join us in honoring your Union ancestor.

The SUVCW is a group directly linked to Civil War Union veterans. It is the only male organization recognized by and representing the Grand Army of the Republic, a powerful veterans group made up of Union Army, Navy, and Marine Corps enlisted men and officers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1881, the SUVCW was formed to perpetuate the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic and the men who fought to preserve the unity and indivisibility of our nation. We also honor the memory of the wartime president, Abraham Lincoln. The SUVCW was officially incorporated by an Act of Congress in 1954.

The SUVCW has a national organization known as the Commandery-in-Chief and several national officers. Departments exist in many states, with several individual "camps" in most departments. Phelps Camp was recently added to the newly formed Department of Missouri. Other camps exist in Cape Girardeau and St. Louis. Although most potential members join a camp near their home, there is a "Member-at-Large" category for men who reside in states where no camps exist. An annual "National Encampment" is held in various cities around the nation.

To honor the men who preserved the Union during the Civil War, the SUVCW sponsors or participates in a number of activities including:

Ceremonies and programs to commemorate events and honor leaders important to the Civil War and the G.A.R.

Erecting, maintaining, and preserving monuments and plaques marking events and people of the Civil War

Supporting the preservation of battlefield sites

Collecting and preserving artifacts, records, and memorabilia of the G.A.R. and the Union forces

Locating, recording, and marking the graves of Union veterans. Decorating graves on Memorial Day and other occasions

Presenting scholarship awards for Civil War studies

Encouraging research and writing on the period and engaging in other similar activities.

Phelps Camp was formed in 1994, and is actually named for three members of a prominent local family who each made important contributions to the preservation of the Union during the Civil War.

John Smith Phelps was a prominent U.S. congressman before and during the war, who also served as colonel of the "Phelps Regiment, Missouri Infantry," and led that regiment into action at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, March 7-8, 1862. He later served as military governor of Arkansas, and after the war was elected governor of Missouri.

Mary Whitney Phelps, his wife, safeguarded the body of Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon after his death at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, August 10, 1861, and helped care for the wounded of her husband's regiment after the Battle of Pea Ridge. Following the war, she established an orphanage in Springfield for the children of Union soldiers.

John Elisha Phelps, their son, fought in the Battles of Wilson's Creek and Pea Ridge, and was appointed colonel of the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry (US). He led that unit into action on several battlefields, including Westport and Mine Creek. He was made a brevet brigadier general at the end of the war for his services.
